John Lawrence  Nugent
Passed away suddenly, at home, on Thursday, February 25, 2016, John Nugent in his 85th year. Beloved husband of Celestine (née Duffy). Loving father of Sean (Cindy), Michelle (John), and Tim (Lisa). Loved grandfather of Graeme, Carleen, Evan, Kate, Lauren, Cheryl, April, Andrew, and Melodie. Dear brother of Barb Smith (Gerald), Tom Nugent (Pat), Brian Nugent(Marian), Karen Aimes (Andy), and Anne Martin (Larry).Brother in law of Catherine Duffy. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. John is predeceased by his parents Thomas and Irene Nugent, by his sister Eileen Burns and her husband Pat, by his sister in law Mary Duffy, and by his brothers in law, Fr. Fergus Duffy, and Paul Duffy. John was a retiree of the Hamilton District School Board, serving as Teacher, Principal, and finally Art Supervisor for over 30 years. Art played a large part in John’s life. Whether he was teaching individuals, painting on his own, doing illustrations and writing articles for various publications, he was happiest with pad and pen. John was also known to be Santa Claus for many organizations and schools. He remained active with groups such as the Men Teachers Choir, a Board Member with the Art Gallery of Hamilton, and the Public School Board Archives. He was an avid Gardener, coming naturally to him from growing up on the Nugent Farm, and was the family historian. Visitation at the P.X. DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 796 Upper Gage Ave. on Sunday and Monday , February 28 and 29 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., with a Prayer Vigil, Sunday at 3:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be offered at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 53 Highway 20 East, Stoney Creek (Elfrida), on Tuesday, March 1 at 10 a.m. Interment, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Good Shepherd Centres would be appreciated by the family. www.dermodys.com.
