Obituary for Mary "Irene" O'Connor (Bothen)

O’Connor , Mary Irene “GrannyO” (nee Bothen)

Passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday October 4th, 2017 in her 99th year at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton. Irene was born on Christmas Eve, 1918 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. On June the 7th, 1941, Irene married James Henry O’Connor (dec. 1977) in Hamilton. Irene and Jim raised five children Jim(Jane), Brian(Barbara), Bruce(Pat), Jude(Paul) and Bernie(Darlene). In 1953, Irene and Jim, following Jim’s brothers and families, and moved to Detroit to raise their young family. Irene was a proud Detroiter for 30 years. She developed many lifelong friendships and memories from her time living in the Motor City. Irene returned back to her hometown of Hamilton for her retirement years. GrannyO was an extremely proud Grandmother to her fifteen grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren. She loved to travel and to spend holidays with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren at their homes in Ontario, California, Michigan, Colorado and North Carolina sharing her positive influence and joy. Irene had a zest for life and curiosity that was unparalleled. She was a sharp, independent, remarkable woman whom cherished her family and friends. She enjoyed playing cards, especially Bridge, the Philharmonic, the theatre, and attending a new movie release. As well, she enjoyed lively conversation and debate, music, and her trusted iPad. She was current, topical and enjoyed learning. In her early years, Irene was a ranked tennis player winning an Ontario Youth Tennis championship. Irene was a devout Roman Catholic. Visitation will be held at P.X. DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 796 Upper Gage Ave. (between Mohawk and Fennell) on Wednesday October 11, 2017 from 1-4 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Elizabeth’s Villa (393 Rymal Rd. W.) on Thursday October 12, 2017 at 3 PM. Cremation to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Good Shepherd Centres or Doctors without Borders would be appreciated by the family.
