Obituary for Sr. Rita Kittel

KITTEL, Sister Rita (formerly Sister Anaclete), School Sister of Notre Dame

Died at Notre Dame Convent, Waterdown, Ontario on September 25, 2018. Sister Rita was six days short of her 107th birthday and she was the oldest living Sister in the Congregation of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. She celebrated her 85th year as a School Sister of Notre Dame.
Predeceased by her parents, Nicholas and Theresa (Binder) Kittel, her brothers, Nicholas, Herbert, Wendell, Jerome, Cletus, and sisters, Loretta Schnarr and Theresa Dietrich. Lovingly remembered by the members of her religious community, and her nieces and nephews.

Sister Rita taught at St. Mary’s School, Kitchener, St. Louis School, Waterloo and St. Mary’s School (Galt), Cambridge. In 1957 she was assigned as teacher and principal at Holy Family School, Hanover. The following year she went to St. Michael’s School, Waterloo as teacher and principal until 1968. For the next three years Sister Rita taught at St. Boniface School, Maryhill. In 1971 she was principal’s relief and librarian at St. Teresa School, Elmira. In 1973 Sister Rita moved to Cloverdale, British Columbia where she set up the library, assisted with the remedial class and later was school secretary at the catholic elementary school. When she moved back to Ontario in 1981, she went to Caledonia. Here she visited the elderly and served as homemaker.
From 1985 – 1989 Sister Rita lived in Aroland, northern Ontario. Although at her former places, she had a regular schedule, Sister Rita adjusted well to the slower pace of lifestyle. She eagerly participated in all the activities of the aboriginal community.
Sister Rita then returned to St. Louis Convent in Waterloo where she tutored ESL students and assisted with various household tasks. When she retired to Notre Dame Convent, Waterdown in 2002, Sister Rita continued to enjoy playing cards and bingo. At age 101, she decided to discontinue performing a daily task in the heritage room.

Visitors will be received at Notre Dame Convent on Friday, September 28 from 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00 - 8:00pm. Prayer service will be held on Friday afternoon at 3:00pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, September 29 at 10:30am. Interment at Notre Dame Convent Cemetery.
