Condolence From: Tony Lo Presti
Condolence: Dear members of the McPhee family:

I had the privilege of knowing John as a teacher when I was a student and as a principal when I became a teacher myself. He was an icon of noble old-school virtues, which he exhibited as a coach, teacher, principal, and family man. He had a positive impact on all who knew him - especially, countless students and colleagues at Cathedral Boys’ High School. He may have passed from this earthly life but his memory will live on and glow in perpetual light. Please accept my sincere condolences.

Condolence From: Vincent Basciano
Condolence: I was a student and played football and basketball under the professional coaching of Coach McPhee' and learned more in the area of sportsmanship, mannerism, courtesy, and respect, than anyone in my life, and I am now in my 72 year. Thank you, Coach McPhee; I will miss you; you will always be remembered and the conversation of a great man and gentleman. I also send regards on behalf of Rev, Alex J. Kramer, teacher in the 60's from St. Ann's Church, Hamilton, and Mr. Joseph Taranchuk, a personal friend; a student and all-star football and basketball player with Coach McPhee in the 60's/70's; later a coach and Teacher with Special needs kids at Cathedral. Thank you, and God bless the McPhee family. Vincent Basciano - Student - 1962 - 1964.

Condolence: As a senior at Brebeuf in the early 80's I remember Mr. McPhee randomly showing up at football practice---who was this Lombardi, Landry like figure watching from the sidelines wearing a fedora and overcoat ? We soon discovered his great football legacy...I saw him as man of great faith and integrity, and a great educational leader. I thank him one more time for sharing his early teenage memories of my father as a football player at Cathedral H.S. My heart felt condolences. Rest in peace.

Condolence: My deepest sympathies to Mr. McPhee's entire family. It was an honour to have Mr. McPhee as our neighbour for many years on the Hamilton Mountain. As I was growing up, he was always so supportive, kind and interested in my life and well being. Such a wise man and gentle man whose wonderful family is his legacy. Rest in peace Mr. McPhee. Joan Kemp and family.

Condolence: Mr. McPhee was the principal of Cathedral Boys in the days when that school was the most magnificent high school in the city of Hamilton. His commitment, sense of duty and love for the students under his watch as principal is/was second to none. His incredible tenure as principal should be the "essential template, model" for all who aspire to that honourable role. Our connection to Mr. McPhee began on a cold December day in 1976. He allowed us to become Cathedral students, and the rest is history. We were truly blessed to have had Mr. McPhee as our principal as students, our principal as teachers, as a co-coach on the Cathedral Senior Football team, and, most importantly, as a dear friend since that wonderful day. Thank you for all the wonderful memories sir.

Perhaps Emerson's words say it best for the legacy you leave, "Your actions speak so loudly, I cannot hear what you are saying".

Condolence From: Peter Rosser
Condolence: John was the centre of a conversation shared last evening between two Cathedral old boys: he was a gentleman scholar and for me, the best football coach, perhaps the best athletic coach I had. He was soft spoken but commanded your respect through his knowledge of the game and particularly your next opponent. I regret that I cannot extend my condolences in person as we are away. I will keep him and the McPhee family in my prayers this day.
