McPhee, John Joseph

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of John Joseph McPhee, cherished father, papa and uncle on January 18, 2019 in his 91st year, in Ancaster. Beloved husband of the late Patricia (nee Cliffe). Precious father of Colleen (Robert) Millar, the late Patricia, Shelagh (Nicholas) de Koning, Maureen, Sean (Karen) and Kevin (Colleen) McPhee. Much loved papa John of Katie, Scott, the late Kyle, Matthew, Kala, Michael, Kelly, Danny, Meghan, Shannon, Sarah, Morganne, Brenna, Brigid and Kathleen and great papa of Eva and Jack. Son of the late Aeneas McPhee and Catherine (Neilan), brother of the late Brian (Elizabeth) and late Dennis (Kathleen) McPhee. John was a dedicated and proud teacher, coach and principal at Cathedral Boy’s High School and St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic Secondary within the Hamilton Catholic District School Board for 35 years. John’s generous spirit and devoted service to Catholic Education touched the lives of countless students in the classroom, on the football field and in the gymnasium. We will forever miss his masterful storytelling and love of the piano. Most of all, we will remember his steadfast love for family and his everlasting faith that kept him strong in his final years. We would like to express our deepest gratitude for the spiritual support from St. Ann’s Ancaster Ministry of Care and especially Linda Dayler. Our heartfelt thank you to all the staff at the Willowgrove Long-Term Care in Ancaster and Dr. Jim Wright of the Juravinski Hospital whose support and care were exemplary. Visitation will be held at P.X. DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 796 Upper Gage Ave on Wednesday, January 23rd from 3:00pm -9:00pm. The vigil prayers will be at 3:00 pm. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Ann’s Parish, 11 Wilson St. Ancaster on January 24th at 1:00 pm. Internment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 600 Spring Gardens Road, Burlington. Dear members of the McPhee family: I had the privilege of knowing John as a teacher when I was a student and as a principal when I became a teacher myself. He was an icon of noble old-school virtues, which he exhibited as a coach, teacher, principal, and family man. He had a positive impact on all who knew him - especially, countless students and colleagues at Cathedral Boys’ High School. He may have passed from this earthly life but his memory will live on and glow in perpetual light. Please accept my sincere condolences.

My condolences to the McPhee Family. Thank you for sharing your father with the students/ athletes(especially the football players) of Cathedral Boys. His contributions to develop young men was immeasurable. He would always put others first and has a kind word for them all. R.I.P. Mr. McPhee

I was a student and played football and basketball under the professional coaching of Coach McPhee' and learned more in the area of sportsmanship, mannerism, courtesy, and respect, than anyone in my life, and I am now in my 72 year. Thank you, Coach McPhee; I will miss you; you will always be remembered and the conversation of a great man and gentleman. I also send regards on behalf of Rev, Alex J. Kramer, teacher in the 60's from St. Ann's Church, Hamilton, and Mr. Joseph Taranchuk, a personal friend; a student and all-star football and basketball player with Coach McPhee in the 60's/70's; later a coach and Teacher with Special needs kids at Cathedral. Thank you, and God bless the McPhee family. Vincent Basciano - Student - 1962 - 1964.
