Obituary

MILLETTE, the Honourable Justice Emile Rosario
September 27, 1935 - May 9, 2019

At Joseph Brant Hospital, Burlington, ON, following a lengthy illness.
The Honourable Justice Emile Millette, devoted husband to Helen (née Foster) for 57 years. Loved and admired father of Diane (Thomas Durran), David (Shelba), Brian (Melita Aquilina), and Julie (Lee Brading). Predeceased by his son Brian in December 2018. Proud grandfather of Ryan and Mallory Durran, James and Jasen Millette, and Cobyn and Colsen Brading.

Emile was born in Storthoaks, Saskatchewan to Honorius and Rose-Marie Millette. He was the baby brother of 11 siblings. He is survived by his brother Dr. Lucien Millette, and sisters Lucienne Brière and Georgette Poliquin. Predeceased by his siblings Cécile Jan, Jeanne Chicoine, Charles Millette, Dr. Ovila Millette, Rose-Hélène Bourgeois, Dr. Honorius Millette, Roméo Millette, and Elise Buissé.

Emile attended Gravelbourg College in Saskatchewan at the young age of 11. He studied law at the University of Ottawa and was called to the Bar in April of 1963. He began the practice of law with the firm Williams, Bradley, Merredew, and Millette (later Bradley and Millette) in Pembroke, ON, before continuing on in his own practice in 1981. On August 5, 1982 Emile was appointed as a judge to the District Court of Ontario (later Superior Court) by then Minister of Justice, Jean Chrétien. In his retirement from the Superior Court, he served on the Pension Appeal Board of Canada. Throughout his life, he emphasized hard work, punctuality, faith, and above all, the importance of family.

Emile’s family would like to extend sincere thanks to Dr. Lucien Millette (Uncle Lou) for his guidance and support during Emile’s illness. Merci beaucoup.

A very special thank you to Dr. S. Shaikh at Joseph Brant for seemingly living at the hospital. Dr. Shaikh’s knowledge, professionalism, concern, and compassion will not be forgotten.

A Funeral Mass will be offered by Father Joseph Michel at Saint-Philippe Catholic Church, 472 Locust Street, Burlington, on Tuesday, May 14 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Emile’s Knights of Columbus Chapter, Chevaliers de Colomb Conseil St-Antoine-Daniel #10340, 472 Locust Street, Burlington, L7S 1V1 will be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements entrusted to P. X. Dermody Funeral Home. www.dermodys.com.

Dad, your fight to return to good health and remain with us is an extraordinary example of resilience we will always honour.

My family is so saddened to learn of Emile's passing. I have such fond memories of their time in Pembroke. Helen and my mother Laura were friends. I babysat for them. They had four wonderful children and I enjoyed my time with them. Mr. Millette was kind and patient and such a gentleman. He always made me feel appreciated, if only as the babysitter. Now that I think about it, I believe his devotion to his profession and the respect he was accorded was an inspiration for me. He will be truly missed. My best to Helen, and the Millette family at this sad time. Carol Anne Meehan,

Our sympathy to Mrs. Millette and family on the passing of Mr. Millette. He was a great boss and I enjoyed every day I worked for him. Just the other day we wondered how he was doing. He was special as we had him give the toast to the bride at our wedding. We'll never forget him and we pray your good memories of him will give you comfort at this difficult time. Aunt Helen, David, Dianne and Julie, I was saddened to hear of Uncle Emile’s passing. I remember as a child how exciting it was when Uncle Emile would be making a visit back to Storthoaks. We so enjoyed his fabulous sense of humour and his iconic chuckle! My thoughts and prayers are with you at the difficult time. Christiane (Millette) Thorson

To the Millette family I was very saddened to learn that Emile died last week. I have so many happy memories of our time together in Pembroke. His ready smile, his hearty laugh and, of course, those colourful tales from his latest hunting trip often with David were hallmarks that I shall long remember. I certainly appreciated the friendship that Emile and Helen extended to me on so many occasions. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all at this most difficult time and know as well that he served his family, his community and his profession with great distinction. Sean Conway

Aunt Helen, Diane, David, Julie and families, I am so saddened to hear of Uncle Emile's death after such a trying battle to overcome his illness. He was such a good uncle - I was so proud to call him my Godfather. Please know that we are praying for you all. Rest in peace Ole Uncle (like he used to call himself followed by his unique chuckle). What an accomplished and remarkable man...Rest in Peace Uncle Emile.
