Obituary

Smith, Gerald Arthur

Peacefully at Hamilton General Hospital on September 24th, 2019 in his 88th year. Surrounded by family, Gerald passed away from complications of Diabetes. Loving and devoted husband of Barbara Anne (nee Nugent) for 64 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Arthur Smith and Mary (nee Connors). Son-in-law of the late Thomas and Irene (nee Ginn) Nugent. Loving father of Murray (Sheila), Blair (Jo-Ann), Theresa (Glenn), Arthur (Anna), Jim (Lisa) and Kevin. Proud grandfather of Michael, Anne Marie (Ammar), Aimee (Vince), Matthew, Brent, Kara (Vince) Mark, Dayna (Daniel), Allyson, Abigail, Connor, Jillian and Brendan. Great Grandpa to Ella, Hudson, Talen and Parker.
Brother-in-law of the late John Nugent (Celestine), the late Eileen Burns (Pat), Tom Nugent (Pat), Brian Nugent (Marianne), Karen Ames (Andy) and Anne Martin (Larry).

Gerald began his working years as a farmer, selling at the Farmer’s Market and later to Loblaws. He later joined the Ontario Ministry of Transportation where he served for many years. He was an avid outdoors man and loved to spend time hunting and fishing. He enjoyed many happy years at the family cottage on Baptiste Lake and at the “Camp” near Algonquin Park. As much as Gerald loved spending time in Northern Ontario, he always looked forward to escaping the winter in Madeira Beach, Florida.

Gerald was a long -time parishioner of St. Eugene’s parish, Hamilton and later Incarnation Parish. He was a member of the Hamilton and Mohawk Gun Clubs.

A talented and self-educated man, he taught his family the importance of hard work, faith, family and friends. Gerald was an avid reader, who loved history and had an extensive knowledge of current events. He loved to cook and always looked forward to traveling. He and Barb traveled extensively in their retirement, to Europe and abroad.

The family extends gratitude and thanks to Father Charlie Galea and the caring team of doctors and nurses at the Hamilton General Hospital. Notably Drs. Tobin & Clement.

Visitation will be held at P.X. DERMODY FUNERAL HOME (1919 King St. E. between Rosedale and Cochrane) on Wednesday, September 25th from 7-9 pm and Thursday, September 26th from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm with prayers at 3:30 pm. Mass of Christian Burial at Incarnation of Our Blessed Lord Parish (Barton & Nash) Friday, September 27th, 2019 at 9:00 am. Interment at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery to follow.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made to the Diabetes Society of Canada and Hamilton General Hospital Foundation.
