Obituary

SISTER PATRICIA HANLON
The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada, (Hamilton) are saddened to announce the death of Sister Patricia (Vianney) Hanlon at University Hospital London, Ontario on April 24, 2020 in her 69th year as a Sister of St. Joseph. She was the daughter of the late James Raymond and Mary Katharine (Mahon) Hanlon. She was predeceased by her sisters, Rita and Sister Virginia CSJ. Sister Patricia will be remembered with love, respect and gratitude by her sister, Katharine (James) Meechan, nieces and nephews and their families and the members of her religious family, the sisters of St. Joseph, especially her friend and companion in ministry, Sister Giovanni Finoro.
Sister Patricia was a woman of prayer and faith. She possessed that rare combination of professional competence, personal compassion and humility. She began her life of service in the Healthcare Profession in 1955 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Guelph as a Pediatric Teacher and Director of the School of Nursing and then ministering at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Hamilton as the Supervisor of the Emergency Department. In 1968 she stepped away from Healthcare to become involved in the Congregational Formation Program, serving as the Director of Formation. Sister Patricia returned to St Joseph’s Hospital, Hamilton in1981 where she worked in Pastoral Care until her retirement in 2017. Throughout those years she also took on an extensive telephone ministry deeply meaningful to so many people. In Sister Patricia’s retirement she continued to volunteer in Pastoral outreach to hospitals, nursing homes, funeral homes and beyond. In the fall of 2019, she was welcomed along with other Hamilton sisters into the St. Joseph Residence in London.
There will be a private interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Burlington. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date. Condolences can be sent to: Suite 302, 911 Golf Links Road. Ancaster, Ontario, L9k 1H9
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada for the works of the Congregation. Online condolences can be made to www.dermodys.com

I was saddened to learn of Sister Patricia's passing. My deepest condolences to Sister Patricia's family and to the Sisters of St Joseph.
I always looked forward to Sister Patricia's visit to my nursing unit, with her cheerfulness, always stopping to talk with me and keeping me in her prayers. Always kind words and little treats for everyone. I could always tell if I missed Sister Patricia as her little treats would be found at the nurse's station, the Werthers candies or little Lindt swiss chocolate she would leave behind.
I was privileged to know Sister Patricia throughout my 40yrs nursing career at St.Josephs and shall remember her kindness.
Rest in peace.

My deepest condolences to the family of Sister Patricia and to the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister Patricia was a very special person. She made everything that was difficult so much easier with her words of support and encouragement. She was an angel on earth for so long , and now she belongs to God. She will be missed terribly.

I was so sorry to see that Sister Patricia had passed but she is now in Heaven. She was a dear soul who I have known since the 1990's as she gave my late Mother, Juanita Moore, much consolation in the dialysis area of St. Joseph's. I will miss her telephone calls re my Mom and my late Husband, Ray Johnson, whom she visited in St. Joseph's also. I last talked to her the end of January and she said she was doing well. I took flowers or a plant to her on several occasions. I will make a donation to Neighbour2Neighbour in her memory.
Sincerely, Jane Johnson

Sister Patricia was my Angel and although my heart is now broken, I am comforted in the knowledge that Sister is now with Our Lord. Her awareness of the suffering of others resulted in the healing presence of the Spirit of the Lord in all her friends. Her compassionate ministry was evident when my father, Henry McGee, was hospitalized at St. Joseph’s (Hamilton). Sister never failed to contact me on the anniversary of his death. She prayed for my mother, Rita McGee, also, and again never failed to contact me on the anniversary of her death. She was with our family during the mourning of both my parents. As a Cathedral Girls High School Grad and a St Joseph’s Hospital Foundation Board member, I value the life of Sister Patricia and the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph.
