Obituary for Stanley Chernish

Stanley Chernish
Chernish, Stanley

Surrounded by his loving family, Stanley Chernish passed away on December 10, 2016. At daybreak that day, we lost our beloved uncle and friend, and the world lost one of its kindest citizens.Stan was born in Hamilton, Ontario on February 18, 1925 to Mary and John Chernish. He was the dear brother of Helen (Arthur Brown), Julia (Paul Traynor) and Father Frank Chernish. Stan had many interesting stories about growing up in a loving Polish family in the north end of Hamilton. In his younger years, he worked at his family's pool hall. He later took a job at Stelco where he toiled tirelessly with red hot steel until his retirement in 1986. Tremendously strong and independent throughout his nearly 92 years, Stan always made room in his life for family. He was a wonderful and caring son, brother, cousin, uncle and great-uncle who brightened our lives with his quick wit, his gentle wisdom, his compassion, and his honest outlook on life. He was a truly good man who treated everyone he met with respect and acceptance.
Stan was predeceased by his parents, his siblings, and two nephews who adored him, Peter and Michael Traynor. He will be very missed by his nieces and nephews - Kathryn Traynor, Steve Wraggett, Judy Traynor, Colleen and Dave McGraw, John and Laurie Traynor, Philip and Tim Brown, and Karen Mooney. "Uncle Chocolate" will also be missed by his great-nieces and great-nephews - John Sterne, Krissy and Alex Mitra, Julianne and Heather McGraw, Steve O'Brien, Alannah, Meaghan, and Rachel Traynor, Emily and Katie Traynor, Daniel, Marie-Josee, and Kestrel Wraggett. Visitation will be held at P.X. DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 7 East Avenue South, Hamilton on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm with prayers at 3pm. Donations in Stan's honour gratefully accepted to The Terry Fox Foundation or Hamilton/Burlington SPCA.
