A Good Neighbour

We moved in next door to Al and Carolyn on a damp December day but did not really get to know them until the Spring. The first thing I, (Kathy) remember was Al trying to get under my skin, but I think I shocked him when I said I had his number. I was used to teasing as I worked in a shop of 25 guys. He seemed a little taken back. After that we got on fine. Slowly Barry and he would be comparing whose grass was greener. Which fertilizer to use and when. When was the best time to water and for how long. Just don't look at the water bill when it came in. I remember mentioning about the Cedar Hedge (6 feet tall or more) and said maybe we could go together on a fence. To my astonishment I came home the next day from work and 3/4 of the hedge was gone. Needless to say we got the fence , but it didn't keep us from sitting outside together in the evenings. The shocking news to hear was Al had to have back surgery after he hurt his back while working in Alberta. Poor Carolyn had to go out there and drive his truck home for him. I believe he had two surgeries but that never took his funny bone away. He still could crack the jokes while sitting in the sun with a smile on his face. As he could no longer drive his truck he got a riding cart. We often joked that Barry (or Uncle Bare) as he called him should get one and then they could have races down the street. He sure missed going to the car races. Anytime Al was outside when we came home we would pause with him for a while. He sure had an adventurous life according to the stories he could relate. We will miss seeing him sitting outside in the sunshine with his smoke hoping he didn't burn himself when he inevitably fell asleep or fell off his chair. God bless you Al
